Development plans for GE rice detailed by BASF

Representatives of BASF met with USA Rice Federation's Biotechnology Task Force and the USA Rice Merchants' Association Seed Committee to provide details about BASF's current development of genetically engineered (GE) rice with a "yield enhancement" trait.

Representatives of BASF Corporation, a German-based chemical company, met with USA Rice Federation's Biotechnology Task Force and the USA Rice Merchants' Association Seed Committee to provide details about BASF's current development of genetically engineered (GE) rice with a "yield enhancement" trait.

BASF reported that field development is underway at six U.S. locations and highlighted the stewardship protocols in place to prevent the unintended release into commercial supplies.

USA Rice members were adamant that BASF obtain regulatory approval and consumer acceptance of any GE rice prior to commercialization.

USA Rice will remain in close contact with BASF as development of this GE rice continues.
