The July 16 passage of H.R. 2898 - the Western Water and American Food Security Act of 2015 (HR 2898) - is a positive step toward legislation that could bring common sense to supply water and protect listed species, according to the Westlands Water District (WWD).
The district says the legislation demonstrates the possibility to advance legislation that can balance the needs of people and the environment.
According to a WDD statement, many Congressmen realize that government cannot make it rain, but it can ensure that future rainfall will benefit the interests that need it most - cities, communities, schools, farms, farm workers, and the environment.
Westlands thanked Congressman David Valadao for his leadership and direction to introduce the legislation.
The water district said a solution is within reach to provide relief from the catastrophic effects of chronic water supply shortages which have wreaked havoc on the State of California.
