Insects Expected to Heat Up

Except for sporadic flare-ups of aphids and thrips, overall insect pressure remained light.

Valdez says he has been treating more for thrips this year than in recent years.

“Thrips are not usually a major pest in the lettuce industry here but it is getting to be a problem,” he said. “Harvesting supervisors are complaining a lot more about thrips because they scratch the leaves and affect the crop cosmetically.”

Valdez said has been rotating different materials to keep thrips in check.

“I’ve been trying to use different materials like dimethoate or diazinon or combinations, but so far Lannate insecticide seems to work the best for thrips,” Valdez says.

Valdez says red aphid and mildew were problems earlier in the season but by late July had mellowed.

PCAs also reported a slight increase in cabbage maggot and cabbage aphid this year on cauliflower and broccoli.
