Amber waves of university grain draws large crowd

Full cooperation by the weather – a cool, light breeze, sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s – made it quite comfortable for the 100-plus people attending the annual small grains and alfalfa field day at UC Davis on May 12.

Presentations by university staff and graduate students discussed promising lines of wheat that UC Davis breeders are working on, genetic studies, proper nitrogen application techniques and the discovery of genes that could promise more drought-tolerant traits.

Also discussed were malting barley varieties being studied to supply a growing craft beer industry and advances in oat breeding.
