California Navel orange crop slightly lower

2013-2014 California Navel orange crop forecast at 2 percent less at 88 million cartons, according to NASS. Average fruit diameter was 2.338 inches Sept. 1. Central Valley estimate is 85 million cartons.  

The initial 2013-14 California Navel orange forecast is 88.0 million cartons, down 2 percent from the previous season, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. 

Survey data indicated a fruit set per tree of 265, below the five-year average of 315. 

The average Sept. 1 fruit diameter was 2.338, above the five-year average of 2.244, and the largest since the 2004-2005 season.

Of the total Navel orange forecast, 85.0 million cartons
