Skip a trip to your doctor’s office, and look at your holiday dinner table instead. That honey-glazed ham likely came from a line of pigs tested for DNA favoring higher meat quality. Genetic markers were used to produce the high-yield stalks of corn that went into the stuffing. And the tablecloth on which the feast rests might have been woven from the fibers of cotton plants specially bred to thrive in arid conditions.
While the use of genetic testing in modern medicine to provide personalized drug treatments and predict disease risk largely remains a distant goal, genomics is sweeping through the world of agriculture.
