Field crops

Cotton setting bolls [3] is 80 percent complete, just behind last year’s 84 percent and the five-year average of 88 percent. Cotton conditions are good to excellent.

Most alfalfa [4] is in fair to good condition. Harvesting is active on more than three-fourths of Arizona’s acreage. Range and pasture conditions vary from very poor to good depending on the location.

Vegetables, fruit, and specialty crops

Arizona growers shipped seedless watermelons this week.

Weather summary

Temperatures were mostly normal across Arizona for the week ending Aug. 8, ranging from 7 degrees below normal at Parker to 5 degrees above normal at Grand Canyon.

The highest temperature was 113 degrees at Paloma. The lowest reading at 49 degrees occurred at Grand Canyon.

Precipitation was recorded in 18 of the 22 stations this week. Maricopa received the least at .04 inches of precipitation. Flagstaff received the most at 1.82 inches of precipitation. Five of the 22 weather stations have below normal precipitation to date, mostly in the northern areas of the state.
