2011 California walnut acreage at 280,000

2011 California walnut acreage is estimated at 280,000 acres, up 10 percent from 2009.  2011 acreage breakdown - 245,000 bearing and 35,000 non-bearing. Chandler was the leading variety with more than 79,000 bearing acres. San Joaquin County had the largest planted acreage with 14 percent of the total. 

2011 California walnut acreage is estimated at 280,000, up 10 percent from 2009, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service. 

Of the total 2011 acreage, 245,000 were bearing and 35,000 were non-bearing.

Of the walnut acreage reported, Chandler was the leading variety with 79,022 bearing acres followed by Hartley with 36,535 bearing acres.

Chandler represents 63 percent of the non-bearing acreage.

San Joaquin County had the largest planted acreage with 14 percent of the total, followed by Butte County with 12 percent and Tulare County with 11 percent.
