Almond talks set Dec. 3-4 in Modesto

The Almond Board of California invites you to attend the 31st Almond Industry Conference, Dec. 3-4 at the Modesto Centre Plaza in downtown Modesto.

Just as Men's Health magazine crowned the almond “King Nut” in May 2003 based on a nutritional comparison of nuts, it could have easily been crowned for its three consecutive years of record-breaking shipments.

This year's two-day conference theme “Good to Great” will offer something for everyone in a new and improved program format. On both days of the conference, participants will be exposed to a complete overview of global marketing programs and growers will benefit from production research findings with continuing education credits. In addition, all conference participants will have the opportunity to visit the industry tradeshow featuring more exhibitors and an expanded layout.

Board review

The conference will open on Wednesday, Dec. 3 with a review of Almond Board Global Marketing Programs, followed by Pollination and Environmental research presentations and a myriad of dynamic and technical speakers.

Wednesday's conference speakers include:

  • Dr. Lester Crawford, deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, speaking on the FDA, Nutrition and the Almond Health Claim.

  • Undersecretary William T. “Bill” Hawks, United States Department of Agriculture speaking at lunch about air quality and its impact on the almond industry.

  • Natalie Schoch, manager of the Global Trends Program at the Kellogg Co. sharing her insights on innovation and strategic food trends.

The Dec. 3 program will conclude with a reception and dinner featuring Sally Ride, first female astronaut in space as she inspires the almond industry for its launch from “Good to Great”.

Thursday sessions

Thursday, Dec. 4 will feature an all-day series of information sessions presenting the latest findings on production research affecting the almond industry including the following production research topics: Disease Management, Insect Pest Management, Orchard Management and Variety Development. In addition, production research posters will now be on display both days of the conference during the tradeshow with researchers available at arranged times to answer questions.

A mid-morning session on Thursday will again present the Almond Board Global Marketing Program review for anyone who may have not been able to attend the presentation the previous day.
