Limited hail damage reported in California grapes

Isolated hail storms in the San Joaquin Valley on May 7 caused spotty damage to some crops in the region.

According to the National Weather Service, there were reports of hail up to 1 inch in diameter from the early May storm.

These photos submitted by University of California Cooperative Extension Viticulture Farm Advisor Lindsay Jordan show the hail on the ground near Chowchilla and some of the damage caused to a vineyard.

California viticulture expert Steven Vasquez, an agronomist with a Fresno-based company called Crop Vitality, said the vines may "grow out" of the damage and recover, depending on the extent of the damage.
