Farmers honored through the Swisher Sweets-Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year are leaders in their industry and communities. PhytoGen furthers their efforts with donations to the charities of their choice each year.
Since becoming a partner in the Southeastern Farmer of the Year program three years ago, PhytoGen has made donations to 25 charities on behalf of state farmers of the year. Recipient charities in 2014 ranged from local FFA chapters to the Gary Sinise Foundation.
Duane Canfield, portfolio marketing leader for PhytoGen, notes the broad impact of the program.
“The agricultural industry impacts the economic health and community well-being of our country from Main Street to Pennsylvania Avenue,” Canfield said. “The donations PhytoGen makes on behalf of state winners in The Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Farmer of the Year program reflect the commitment and impact our farmers have on their communities and our country.”
This year marked the 25th anniversary of the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year program, casting a due spotlight on American farmers. One grower is chosen from each of the 10 Southern states. Every grower chosen is one of agriculture’s top business leaders, innovators, environmentalists and community leaders.
PhytoGen is one of several agricultural industry partners who participate in the Farmer of the Year program. One aspect of the PhytoGen commitment is each Farmer of the Year can choose to receive either PhytoGen® cottonseed or a monetary donation to a chosen charity. The overall Southeastern Farmer of the Year makes that choice twice.
Charities supported by the farmers over the last three years include veteran’s programs, cancer research, local children’s homes and hunger programs in several states. Most favored are 4-H and FFA.
