Return to policy successes of past

Mr. Cline: Read your article on telling agriculture's story in the Western Farm Press and enjoyed it very much.

One thing that I found missing is the key element in all farm debates and that is that no one is talking about paying the producers of food. Everyone wants cheap food but no one realizes how expensive cheap food is because unless we pay for production, wealth is destroyed by not earning income into our economic system and debt and interest are injected in its place.

We all want to feed the world but unless we keep producers economically viable, we will starve like the Soviet Union did with this same policy and it IS the same policy that we have today. Some politicians even say, "let's import our food if we can't compete in the U.S."

I want to ask them these questions:

Do you want to wait in line at the grocery store for your food like you did for gasoline because of OPEC? This will happen.

The other question people need to ask is:

When you travel to foreign countries, the first thing you want to know is "can I eat the food and drink the water?"

Is this what the consumer really wants for the access for "cheap food?" I don't think so.

Finally in closing, if our cheap food policy is the answer for anyone besides large corporations (our farm bill is nothing more than a corporate welfare policy, using us producers to supply them with cheap money making raw materials), then why is it that we have starving people and bankrupt farm prices?

There is an answer for these questions if only people will look at what has worked before and not fall for the same tax and subsidize failures that we use today. Regards, Wayne Decker Hutto, Texas 78634 [email protected]
