Salinas Valley Farm Show serves $6 billion Central Coast ag market

The only farm show exclusively serving this high value, intensive farming market is the Salinas Valley Farm Show, Salinas, Calif., scheduled this year for Oct. 3 at the Salinas Valley Community Center.

Show hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Show admission is free.

The 2002 show is once again co-sponsored exclusively by Gonzales Young Farmers and Western Farm Press, the official farm show publication.

More than 100 Exhibitors are expected for this year’s show featuring indoor and outdoor exhibits.

There will be two educational seminars, one a morning session on precision agriculture and in the afternoon a continuing education seminar sponsored by the Monterey County chapter of the California Agricultural Production Consultants Association.

There also will be a forklift rodeo and ride and drive demonstrations.

"Last year the Gonzales Young Farmers took over management of the show with strong community support," said Don Ostini, Young Farmers member and show chairman.

"We were very pleased with exhibitor support, community support and the attendance," said Ostini. "We had more than 1,000 people attending the show, including many farmers and pest control advisors from outside Central Coast."

Ostini is optimistic attendance will even higher this year.

"The feedback we received from many exhibitors was positive," said Ostini.

"We worked hard at publicizing the show and that proved invaluable in getting the support we saw last year," said Ostini.

While the show is a fundraiser for the Young Farmers community projects, Ostini said it is more than that.

"We think it is an opportunity for the agricultural industry on California’s Central Coast to come together as a community event," said Ostini. "That happened last year and we think the show will only grow from last year’s success."

Gonzales Young Farmers is a 60-year-old organization that gives more than $7,500 annually in scholarships and provides manpower and financial support for events like the Gonzales Community Fair and the Monterey County Fair Livestock Judging Contest.
