Year's food bill earned by Feb. 2

The average American earned enough disposable income by Feb. 2 to pay for their food for the entire year, according to the Arizona Farm Bureau Federation.

The latest statistics compiled by the Agriculture Department's Economic Research Service indicate Americans currently spend on average about 9.5 percent of their disposable personal income on food. A 2002 University of Arizona study noted agriculture is a $6.6 billion contributor to Arizona's economy.

“Our nation's increasing standard of living would certainly be reduced without the safe, abundant and affordable domestic food supply produced by America's farmers and ranchers,” according to Ann Palmer, Farm Bureau's Women's Leadership Committee chair. “Home-grown food and fiber are a vital part of this country's homeland security.”
